To become a notary public in Maryland, an individual must be:
- At least 18 years of age;
- Of known good character, integrity and abilities; and
- Living or working in the State of Maryland.
If an individual meets the above requirements, they must complete an application which is submitted to the Secretary of State with a non-refundable $20.00 processing fee. A notary bond is not required in Maryland. The application then goes to the State Senator of the applicant’s Senatorial District. If the Senator approves the application, it is sent to the Secretary of State where apointment is made under the approval of the Governor.
