Become a Notary in California

To become a notary public in California, applicants must be at least 18 years old and a legal California resident; complete an approved course of study; pass a written exam; and clear a criminal background check.

Applicants are required to submit a completed application and a color passport photograph at the examination site. State law also requires all applicants to be finger printed as part of the background check.

Those who ultimately receive a notary public commission have 30 days to file an oath of office and file a $15,000 surety bond with the county clerk's office.
