The Balsam Range Band will headline a Friday fundraiser sponsored by the CCCTI Physical Therapist Assistant Club.

The “Bluegrass Attack to Prevent Brain and Heart Attacks” event benefits the Caldwell Memorial Hospital Foundation and CMH Stroke Center.

The concert will be held at 6 p.m. Friday at the J.E. Broyhill Center featuring the Hendersonville-based band, which earned a 2010 IBMA Emerging Artist nomination. The Snyder Family will open the show.

Tickets are $12 adults and $8 students/children in advance, $15 adults and $10 students/children at the door.

Catawba Valley Community College’s Small Business Center is taking applications for its next FastTrac New Venture program, which begins March 1. Application deadline for the 20 available seats is Wednesday.

NewVenture is a practical, hands-on business development program designed to help startup and existing business owners fine-tune skills needed to create, manage and grow a successful business. Local entrepreneurs and business advisers help participants bring ideas to reality and reach new growth.

Classes will be held 5:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesdays, March 1-May 17 in CVCC’s new Business Industry Training Complex. Cost is $125.

Simon Whittaker will be the keynote speaker at the annual CVCC Multicultural Celebration in Honor of Black History at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Multipurpose Complex.

The winner of the Outstanding Contribution to the African-American Community Award also will be recognized.

A Fulbright Scholar, Whittaker is co-founder of the Whittaker Institute for Success and Enrichment. His firm specializes in counseling, diversity training, career and life coaching, and organizational enhancement training.

The Hmong Dancers, Raza Latina Dancers, Challenger Early College High School and a community mass choir also will perform. Light refreshments will be served before the program.

CVCC will offer a notary public course 5:15-8:45 p.m. Monday and Tuesday on the Alexander campus.
