Become a Notary in Alabama

Notaries in the State of Alabama are appointed and commissioned by the probate judges of the various counties. The probate judge reports to the Secretary of State the name, county, date of issuance and date of expiration of the commission of each notary appointed and commissioned under applicable law. Please note that the Alabama Secretary of State doesn't appoint notaries.

The Attorney General's office issued an Opinion to the Secretary of State that discusses the appointment, commission, qualifications, bond and seal of notaries public in Alabama. The AG requires that "Notaries public must give bond with sureties, to be approved by the judge of probate of the county for which they are appointed, in the sum of $10,000*, payable to the state of Alabama...Such bond must be executed, approved, filed and recorded in the office of the judge of probate before they enter on the duties of such office."
